New Name, Same Me

34 is not a monumental age by any means.
For me, it is a little more bittersweet.
I have now lived half of my life without my dad.

In order to honor him and everything he brought to my life,
including my love of learning and a personality that draws people from across the room,
I am bringing back his name as part of my own.

Call me Ishmael.
Because I’m pretty excited to bring this small piece back into my life.

New name, same me.

  1. So beautiful! I lost my dad just over a month ago, and your post really hit home. What a lovely way to honour somebody so special to you.

P.S. I’ve never met you in person, but just from your online presence, I have no doubt that you draw people from across the room!

    1. Aviva,
I’m so sorry for your loss. It is a pain unlike anything else…even years later. One day I hope to meet you in person! When you see the short red hair and hear the loud laugh, you’ll know it’s me. 🙂

  2. Very cool you had an amazing daddy and a super great mom. Will always treasure that I have known you since birth (34) years 🙂 over half my life. Love you much for all you are and all you have in your future!! Glad. I have been a part of most of it 😀

  3. I love this story. I had the same feeling after my Dad passed to change my last name back to my maiden name. When people ask if I’ll change it again, my gut feeling is I kinda wanna keep it. As if it was the last little bit I can hold onto…
